League Cup (Carling): Round 2

Spurs Stroll Thru League Cup Opener

Sept 22 (SSn 04/05)
Oldham Ath. 0
Tottenham H. 6

The League Cup has in recent years been Tottenham's redemption, the one competition in which our underperforming club showed glimpses of former glory.

Could you ask to get Mr Santini a baseball cap that fits him. Last night he seemed a bit uncomfortable with his and kept trying different ways to place it on his head.

David St.Hubbins

Under the new Arnesen-Santini partnership Spurs have the luxury of regarding the contest as a secondary consideration, making seven changes from the side that held Chelsea.

But the "second" team that trotted out at Boundary Park was the equivalent of our full strength side not so long ago, and after an early struggle to take hold of the game, they eventually left the hosts, a club that was so close to extinction a year ago, utterly routed and demoralized. So many scorching goals went sailing in towards the end that you only had to be distracted for a moment, like paying the bill at the TV bar, and you'd miss another crackerjack sailing effortlessly into the Latics' tortured net.

The actual order was Kanoute 37, Keane 64, Defoe 71, Bunjevcevic 87, Gardner 90, Kanoute 90.

Yes, even Bunji scored a corker. That's how easy this affair was.

The days of getting thumped by lower league Northern clubs in cup competitions appear to be over for the Lilywhites of London. And that can be said with confidence.

League Cup (Carling): Quarter-Final

Pong at the Lane

Dec 01 (SSn 04/05)
Spurs 1
Liverpool 1

Spurs looked set to win this Carling Cup quarterfinal when Defoe scored in extra time, but then Sinama Pongolle turned the air sour at White Hart Lane, equalizing with just minutes of extra time left, and netting his penalty kick in the shootout to help eliminate the home side.

Watford in the semis promised Spurs a real shot at wrapping up a European place.

The rationalization is that we can now focus on the all important Premiership. Oh, and The FA Cup. Go Kanoute!

League Cup (Carling): Round 4

Spurs Starting To Jol

Nov 09 (SSn 04/05)
Burnley 0
Tottenham H. 3

Back on Nov 06, 2002, The Clarets sent Spurs out of the Worthy Cup 2-1 in the third round.

Tonight was a a very different story. Three-nil up with the Spurs thousands singing merrily.

This is the first game with Martin Jol officially installed as the new Spurs manager.

Spurs took the lead in the first half with a close-in left-footed Keane scorcher (31) from a right wing cross from Carrick with Pamarot supplying.

Burnley pressurized the Spurs goal and could easily have scored two or three times before the break.

Early in the second half Robbie doubled the lead (52), and Defoe (58) made it three with a beautiful curler. The Spurs fans erupted into "Spurs are on their way".

Warning to jah world: Tottenham Hotspur are back in biz!

League Cup (Carling): Round 3

We Did It!

Oct 27 (SSn 04/05)
Bolton Wanderers 3
Tottenham H. 4

"Come on Spurs. Surprise us!" was The Spur's pre-match plea. And did they 'eck. Not to mention entertain with edge of the seat stuff.

As usual, the League Cup provides Spurs with the most realistic chance of silverware and a place in the European sun, and in that vein Spurs rallied the troops and hit back at the team to whom they had lost just days earlier.

Twice in regulation time Spurs came from behind, and in extra time, went two ahead before Wanderers grabbed one back through ex-Spur "Sir Les".

King's own goal gave Bolton the lead on 27.

Spurs opened and closed their account courtesy of Defoe on 44 and 103.

Meanwhile Bunje got the crucial second equalizer on 84, and Brown edged Spurs ahead in extra time on 95.

More reactions to come as the League Cup becomes a focal point of this year's Spurs campaign for UEFA entry.
